A local New York State Trooper who was killed in an accident more than two years ago is being honored for his gift of organ donation. Trooper Kevin Dobson was struck and killed by a passing vehicle in March of 2011 as he was making a routine traffic stop on I-290 in the Town of Tonawanda. Dobson was a registered donor, and his contributions have helped enhance the lives of 70 people, according to the donation center Unyts.
Dobson's father, former sheriff's deputy and Democratic sheriff candidate Richard Dobson, says he is proud of his son's enduring legacy.
"The thought that parts of Kevin will be living in other people, in my mind, keeps Kevin alive. It's also important to me that other people out there in the community see this so that they know how important it is to donate organs," Dobson said.
Trooper Dobson is being honored on New Year's Day as part of a float in the Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, California.
The float will feature a large floragraph portrait of Dobson, made of dried flowers, seeds, spices, and other organic materials.
Dobson's story was chosen from dozens across the country by CryoLife, a cardiovascular tissue processing bank. Members of the family have been invited to attend.
