Salvation Army prepares Thanksgiving for hundreds

Mike Desmond/wbfo news

The Salvation Army is following an honored tradition in serving a Thanksgiving meal today at the Golden Age Center on Main Street in Buffalo. Volunteers and donors have teamed up to make the day special for those who otherwise would go without.

Danny Hamilton has a stack of the pizza ovens and yesterday they were packed with 20 aluminum foil wrapped turkeys for the meal today.

He also has to prepare the turkeys and other foods for the meals the Salvation Army will distribute on the street Sunday and Monday.

Major Thomas Applin says anywhere between 200 and 300 people are expected on Thanksgiving.

"A wide variety of people come to have dinner," Applin said.

"They are homeless people. They are people who attend our programs. They are people who live in the neighborhood. They are people who have no place else to go for the day. They are senior citizens. They are people who are living in our shelter.

Once the turkeys are ready to go, Hamilton started baking the pies for the meal.

Major Applin says it's all part of trying to help those who have problems, including the meals on the street two-days a week.
