A proposed housing development on Buffalo's East Side may take a big step forward Tuesday. The Community Action Organization wants to build housing on the former site of Deaconess Hospital, part of a neighborhood the CAO is trying to assemble in that community. President and CEO Nathan Hare says that was a residential neighborhood before Deaconess was built and the goal is to return to that.
The project site is near the Saint Martin's housing already developed by CAO. Hare says the city Planning Board is being asked this morning to approve the design and site plan.
"These are going to be 23 detached houses, 22 of which are going to be two-family homes, anywhere from two to four bedrooms for each of those homes. The 23rd building is a three-story building that will have 36 total apartments in it," Hare says.
Hare says the goal is to have everything including the financing in place by the end of the year so construction can start in the spring with around a year needed to build what might be a $23 million project.
He says the idea is to create a neighborhood making good use of MLK Park just across the Kensington Expressway and nearby Makowski Early Childhood Center and Charles Drew Magnet School.
