The United Way of Buffalo and Erie County kicked off its annual campaign drive Thursday. The organization has announced an ambitious fundraising goal.
"The 2013 United Way campaign goal is going to be $14.2 million. That is approximately $165,000 higher than our performance last year," said United Way president Michael Weiner.
Weiner appeared Thursday morning the University at Buffalo's Center for Tomorrow in Amherst. He announced this year's campaign goal with UB's vice president for University Life and Service Dennis Black , who is serving as this year's chair.
Over the last three years, United Way has been back on track in successfully reaching its goals. Weiner tells WBFO News a ten-year, downward fundraising trend has been reversed, with new strategies added.
"The economy is a bit better that it has been over the last several years, that helps. We are utilizing alternative strategies for resource development. If you go to supermarkets these days, you can scan in an additional gift for the United Way," said Weiner.
More than 1,200 local companies and organizations are expected to join this year's campaign effort.
