Pierogi plant to locate in Chautauqua County

County of Chautauqua Industrial Development Agency

A new pierogi manufacturing company is coming to Westfield in Chautauqua County. Nowinski Pierogies is expected to be fully operational by early October. Initially, the company will create 13 new jobs in the first year. Up to 50 jobs are expected in the next five years.

Owners Beverly Braley and Rachelle McFeely, a mother and daughter, recently bought out Nowinski from the retiring owners, who are located in northeast Pennsylvania.

Bill Daly, director and CEO the Chautauqua Industrial Development Agency, says the IDA approved assistance to the new co-owners, who recently purchased a facility on Bourne Street in Westfield to set up manufacturing operations.

The company will receive a 10-year Payment in Lieu of Tax schedule, $640,000 in AL Tech Revolving Loan Fund financing for working capital, machinery and equipment, abatement of sales tax during the construction period, and abatement of mortgage recording tax.

"The pierogies are actually sold in Buffalo and Dunkirk and various areas," Daly says. "It was time for [the previous owners] to get out of the business. The ladies looked where they wanted to set up and found the perfect building."

Additional economic incentives were also approved by Empire State Development. Chautauqua County Executive Gregory Edwards says gaining the pierogi manufacturer is significant for his region.

"With a name already known to many in Western New York, we are excited that Nowinski brand pierogies will now be produced right here in Chautauqua County, creating significant new jobs for the local economy.  This is a big win for us and another excellent job coordinating assistance and incentives by the CCIDA," Edwards says, in a statement.

Pierogies, which originated in Eastern Europe, are unleavened dough dumplings first boiled, then baked or fried, usually in butter with onions. They are typically stuffed with potatoes, sauerkraut, ground meat, cheese, or fruit.
