Canisius College hockey moving into HARBORcenter

gogriffs.com

Starting next fall, the Canisius College men's hockey team will be practicing and playing their games at HARBORcenter in downtown Buffalo.

The partnership, which had been rumored for months, was announced Tuesday morning.

HARBORcenter, a $172 million hockey-themed entertainment complex, will feature two full-sized ice rinks upon completion in September of 2014.

Under the multi-year agreement, Canisius will play all of its home games on the facility's feature rink, which allows for a crowd of 1,800 spectators.

"It helps makes Canisius College part of the exciting things that are happening here in downtown Buffalo," said College President John Hurley.

The Golden Griffins will also use HARBORcenter as their practice facility, with a permanent locker room and access to training equipment.

Canisius, a Division I program, has played its games at the Buffalo State Sports Arena for the past 14 years.

“This is a historical day for our hockey program and represents another strong commitment to the growth and importance of intercollegiate athletics at Canisius College,” said Canisius College Director of Athletics Bill Maher, in a statement. “The opportunity to have a world-class facility like HARBORcenter as our home venue is outstanding and will be a critical piece for Dave Smith and his coaching staff to continue to build a championship-level program."
