Nun with gambling habit sentenced for church thefts

A Catholic nun who authorities say stole to support her compulsive gambling addiction has been sentenced to 90 days in jail.Sister Mary Anne Rapp, 68, of Lewiston admitted to stealing $128,000 from two Orleans County churches where she worked in the years between 2006 and 2011. She faced up to six months in jail after pleading guilty to grand larceny.

Prosecutors say Rapp stole from St. Mark Church in the Town of Kendall and St. Mary in the Village of Holley and gambled the money away at area casinos. She has been ordered to pay full restitution.

In addition to the jail time, she was also sentenced to five years probation and 100 hours of community service.
