Faced with the same budget that was rejected just weeks ago, voters in Wilson turned down their school budget on Tuesday. Meanwhile, five other districts, including Clarence, gained voter approval of their spending plans for the approaching school year.
Voter turnout increased by nearly 30 percent in Wilson where the budget was defeated by a margin of 903-to-604. The district will now turn to a zero-tax increase, contingency budget.
In Clarence, the vote was nearly two-to-one in favor of a new plan that cuts spending by $2.5 million while boosting taxes by 3.8 percent. Over 5,000 residents turned out to approve the revised budget, far less than the 8,000-plus who rejected a proposed 10-percent tax increase in May.
Budgets were approved Tuesday in Alden, Bemus Point, Lewiston-Porter and Niagara-Wheatfield.
