City investing $2.3 million in East Side neighborhoods

Chris Caya/WBFO News

Streetscape improvements are on the way for Buffalo's Lovejoy and Kaisertown neighborhoods.Common Council President Richard Fonatana, who represents the area, says along with repaving Clinton Street, energy-saving LED lighting will be installed on Clinton and on Lovejoy Street.

"LED technology has come a long way. We're going to be installing some new lights on the strip, in addition to the ones we have. Essentially, we have 30 lights on Lovejoy. We're going to have 36 when we're done, with even more high-quality light at less of a cost to taxpayers to produce that light," Fontana says.

Fontana says the new lighting will save money in a city where the electric bill this year is pegged at over $14 million.

As part of the $2.3 million project, new curbs, handicap-accessible sidewalks, and drainage will be installed, where needed. Mayor Byron Brown says infrastructure improvements add to the quality of life for residents and businesses in the area and help attract new investment in the city.

The work is set to begin in August and be complete by next summer.
