Mystery motorist saves drowning man

A dangerous rescue from the rushing waters of Tonawanda Creek near Batavia was performed by a good samaritan on Saturday morning. Calls for help brought passing motorist Gary Willis to the shores of the creek. Willis plunged into the turbid waters, struggling but succeeding in bringing the victim to shore. A nearby resident, Bruce Bartz, was on hand to assist with landing the victim.

Willis quickly disappeared and was only later identified.

The victim was released after treatment at United Memorial Medical Center.
