Buffalo Firefighters, including a city hazmat unit, responded to the University at Buffalo's South Campus around 9:20 a.m. Wednesday. Fire crews were dispatched to the campus to investigate reports of smoke in UB’s Biomedical Education Building off Bailey Avenue.
WBFO News was on the scene and by 9:30 a.m. several Buffalo fire trucks and emergency crews arrived.
Students were ordered out of the building as crews investigated the situation. Firefighters had reported a rubber-like burning smell in an elevator.

According to UB, investigators determined that the source was an overheated fan in the building's ventilation system.
A short time later fire and safety officials determined that it is now safe to return to the building.
