Construction set for Kensington Expressway

The first of April brings with it the start of construction in several locations along the Kensington Expressway. A project on Route 33 is funded through the New York Works program.
This year's maintenance work involves four spans over the Kensington: the Union Road bridge in Cheektowaga; in Buffalo, the Deerfield Avenue, Hospital Drive, and East Delevan bridges.

Department of Transportation Public Information Officer Susan Surdej says one of the goals is to minimize any impact to drivers.

"When we have to take lanes on the 33, we're going to try to either do it overnight or we're going to do them in off-peak hours," Surdej told WBFO News.

"So, for example, we would not be working with reduced lanes on the inbound Kensington during the morning rush hour. We're not going to be working and reducing lanes outbound during the evening rush hour."

The cost of the rehab work, which involves replacing the bridge decks, totals $7.2 million.

"We're just asking drivers, as always, to slow down in work zones; be aware of your surroundings; expect the unexpected in a work zone," Surdej said.

The DOT expects re-decking will add about 25 years to the life of the structures and help avoid much more costly bridge replacement. The work's expected to continue through late fall.
