A report compiled by Univera Healthcare indicates that infection rates in Western New York hospitals remain high. The study covered hospital-derived infections that occurred between 2008 and 2011. Those infections followed surgical procedures or the use of catheters to draw blood or to introduce fluids into a patient's system. Though the overall rate of infection improved in Western New York, the region's track record still ranked higher than most other upstate New York areas.
Such infections increase health care costs and raise obvious concerns.
