Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown says the Hire Buffalo & WNY initiative is working. To date, 115 unemployed people have gained a new job through the program.
The city, in conjunction with Business First magazine, launched the program in January. It encourages area employers to hire at least one unemployed resident. The mayor says 57 of the 115 hired are City of Buffalo residents.
"We are very pleased with how well Hire Buffalo is going, so far," the mayor said Monday.
Still, Brown says more can be accomplished to hire the unemployed.
"There are 22,000 employers in Erie County and if every single one of them hired just one Buffalo resident, that would be 22,000 people in our community going back to work," Brown said.
Today the mayor announced a new partner, Cumulus Radio, has also committed to supporting the ongoing effort. The company owns four commercial radio stations in Buffalo and will host a career fair Tuesday at the Adam's Mark Hotel.
