Vacant warehouse catches fire in North Buffalo

Chris Caya/WBFO News

Firefighters battled a three-alarm blaze inside a vacant warehouse off Elmwood Avenue in North Buffalo early Friday afternoon. The building is behind the former M. Wile facility near Home Depot, between Hertel Avenue and Hinman Street.

The main part of the fire was under control around 1:20 p.m. Friday, but a portion of the roof did collapse.

Commissioner Garnell Whitfield says fighting the fire in the large building was complicated because of obstacles inside. Whitfield says Erie County's Air One helicopter provided valuable information.

"We thought we had this under control...but once we deployed Air One up there, they were able to ascertain that there were more hot spots in the building that were unbeknownst to us and, because they came, we were able to get to those spots," Whitfield said.

No injuries are reported. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
