The rush hour commute could be a slow go this evening. National Weather Service Meteorologist Jim Mitchell says a band of moderate to heavy snow is expected to sweep through the region, making roads slick and reducing visibilities."It's going to be hitting the area during rush hour. I'm not excepting a lot of accumulation with it, a couple of inches in a couple of hours, but that's it. It could come down an inch or more an hour at times and we'll have some wind gusts up to 30 mph so there will be some blowing and drifting, as well," said Mitchell.
The snowfall will create slick and snow-covered roadways. Mitchell says visibilities could be reduced to a quarter mile or less in the heaviest bursts of snow. Motorists are urged to slow down and allow extra time to reach their destinations.
"The heavy snow in combination with the wind could definitely prove hazardous," Mitchell said.
The weather service has also issued a wind advisory in effect from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday for all of western New York. Winds will blow at 25 to 35 mph, gusting up to 50 mph.
