Poll says voters welcome new Senate leadership

The new bipartisan coalition in the New York State Senate has the approval of a large swath of voters, according to numbers from Quinnipiac University.

Pollster Mickey Carroll says nearly half of those polled believe the agreement reached earlier this month is preferable to one-party control.

"Forty-eight percent of New Yorkers say they prefer this to either Democratic or Republican control. Will it last? Who knows. Will it work? Who knows," Carroll said.

"A couple of years ago people saw the Senate didn't do anything right and now they see something that maybe will work. They like the idea. They like it better than what they had."

31 percent of voters said they want Democratic control of the Senate, while 17 percent want Republican control.

Governor Andrew Cuomo, meanwhile, continues to enjoy record job approval numbers.

"This is a great poll, this Quinnipiac measure, for Andrew Cuomo," Carroll said.

74 percent of New York voters say they approve of the job Cuomo is doing as governor, compared to just 13 percent who disapprove. Cuomo's numbers appear to have been boosted by his response to Hurricane Sandy, where 80 percent of those polled said he did either an excellent or good job.
