An East Aurora man has now caused bomb scare concerns for two consecutive days in Western New York.
Tuesday's incident occurred at the man's workplace, Anderson Equipment on Military Road in the Town of Tonawanda, where the company discovered a grenade in the work area of 26-year-old Paul Kaiser.
Kaiser was arrested Monday morning in the Village of Leroy during a routine traffic stop after he was found carrying a live grenade in the trunk of his car.
Anderson Equipment called Tonawanda Police when the item was discovered. The company was evacuated and the Erie County Bomb Squad was called in to investigate.
Tonawanda Police Lt. Nick Bado says it was determined that the device was a "novelty item."
"One of their guys went in to take a look from a distance to see what he was working with and he immediately recognized this item as what's called an inert, or not operable, explosive device. It's not a real one. It's something you can buy at an Army surplus store," said Bado.
Bado says based on the circumstances, Kaiser will not be charged in the incident.
"In this particular case, it doesn't appear to have been left on purpose to create a stir. If it were, even if it was a fake device, there would be charges that would be appropriate," said Bado. "It doesn't appear that there was an intent to create any problems, so there will be no charges."
Authorities issued a search warrant following Kaiser's arrest yesterday and searched his home.
