Mayor Brown preparing for Webster Block decision

Summer recess for the Buffalo Common Council wraps up in just over ten days and one of the first things they take up could be a proposal for developing a prime piece of downtown real estate near Canalside.

Mayor Byron Brown says a decision on who will develop the Webster Block is imminent.

"We had a good series of meetings on Monday, with the two  short-listed developers."

Brown says Sabres owner Terry Pegula and developer Carl Paladino provided some additional information and detail on their proposals.  And no major changes have been made.

Paladino's $64 million privately-funded plan includes an 11-story apartment, hotel and retail complex.

Pegula is  offering a $123 million twin-ice rink complex with a hotel, restaurants and retail to draw amateur tournaments downtown.

"Any conveyance of land, any leasing of land, any sale of land, is going to have to go through the Council," Brown said.

"And as we indicated, our  timeline was always to complete this prior to the (start of session) so that   the item would be there for the Council to review and take action on."

Mayor Brown says an announcement could be made in a few days or, at the latest, next week.
