Holding Center inmate attempts suicide

WBFO News file photo

A 54-year-old Williamsville man is in critical condition at Buffalo General Hospital after trying to commit suicide in the Erie County Holding Center Sunday afternoon.

The Erie County Sheriff's Department says Edward Berezowski was arrested Saturday evening after two violent altercations with personnel at a Best Buy store on Transit Road in Clarence. He was taken to the Erie County Holding Center, pending an appearance in Clarence Town Court.

Around 3:16 p.m during a safety inspection of the Echo Long Housing Unit, a deputy found Berezowski hanging in his cell by his jail-issued orange pants. He was cut down and taken to the hospital after CPR was administered.

An investigation is underway to determine whether all Holding Center policies and procedures were followed correctly.
