Concern over preserving the unique ambience of the Elmwood Village region has led to the establishment of very strict building codes for the area.
The News reports that the Elmwood Village Design Standards were set in 2009 and revised in 2011. However, these guidelines are often overlooked and the problem appears to be City Hall. Enforcement of these standards involves a number of city departments, including those for permits and inspections along with planning and zoning. Critics claim that these offices are not working in concert.
A City Hall official claims the regulations are being enforced.
