Only one third of Buffalo School students have satisfactory attendance from the start of the school year until the first week of March, according to records obtained from the district by Investigative Post, the non-profit investigative journalism project.
The numbers, obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request, also show that :
- One third of students did not participate in online classes "often enough that their frequent absence put their academic achievement at risk."
- One third of the students missed school at least one day a week.
Buffalo Schools did not comment for Investigative Post on the findings. But education experts like Dia Bryant at the Education Trust NY say that the numbers show a learning deficit that summer school alone might not be able to adress.
