The Niagara County Health Department is dealing with another COVID-19 death and a positive case at Lockport High School.
County Public Health Director Daniel Stapleton said the death was a 76-year-old man with an underlying illness and contact tracing has not yet found the source of the infection.
"Followed all the rules, but other people might not have and any number of people could have put him at risk," Stapleton said. "I just think people need to keep that in mind. This can't be any more serious than that."
The man's death was the 102nd in Niagara County since the pandemic began to sweep across the planet and the first since Aug. 25. Stapleton said the risks to those older and not-quite-healthy are why others need to follow the rules, including masks, social distancing and hand-washing.
Lockport High will be in operation Thursday, in a hybrid style, after an unnamed student was found to be positive. Stapleton said contact tracing began immediately.
"When a student is only going to school two days a week, it makes it much easier to trace who they might have been in contact with. It limits the number of contacts," he said. "But, yeah, we always have to be concerned about if you have a positive case and you have siblings, the siblings are quarantined as well."
