It is being learned that the University at Buffalo was been hit with a nearly $2.2 million judgement, plus expenses, in connection with complications resulting from a UB medical study in 2015.
Andrew Huegel, a 22-year-old UB student at the time, was instructed to swallow a tiny capsule that would let researchers monitor his core temperature. Instead of it passing out of his digestive tract, as expected, the device became lodged in his small intestine, requiring emergency surgery and two more operations.
The Court of Claims issued the judgment and ordered UB to pay for the surgeries, as well.
The school and the research team were found negligent in the way Huegel was cleared for the study, in explaining the risks and in handling the complications that resulted. The University is expected to appeal the decision.
