Tops Markets confirms COVID-19 case at its Williamsville corporate office

Tops Friendly Markets

Tops Friendly Markets said it learned late Saturday evening that one associate who works out of the corporate headquarters in Williamsville tested positive for COVID-19, but those offices are open Monday morning.

"This individual, who is under self-quarantine at a personal residence, last reported to work on Monday, March 9, 2020. Additionally it was also determined that the associate had limited contact with fellow co-workers at the corporate office," Tops said in a statement Monday morning.

"Furthermore, the associate was in a non-retail position and thus had no contact outside of the office building with Tops stores, warehouses, and any other facilities we operate," it said.

The Erie County Department of Health confirmed that later Monday.

"From its contact tracing and epidemiological investigation, ECDOH determined that this individual was not symptomatic during their time at the corporate office, and therefore did not pose a risk of transmission to other TOPS employees per CDC guidelines on COVID-19," it said. "Our investigation did not indicate that the individual had any contact with TOPS stores, warehouses or other facilities during times where they may have been contagious."

Tops said it has been in "open communication" with the Department of Health and will continue to take "all appropriate measures to mitigate potential exposure opportunities and to ensure the safest environment possible for our associates and for our customers."

The grocery chain said employees have been made aware of the confirmed case and advised of measures to help prevent the spread of the virus. In addition, it has taken "immediate steps to completely sanitize the corporate offices prior to the opening of business Monday."

The markets will also be implementing additional restrictions on third-party access to its corporate headquarters.
