After delays, Buffalo addresses lead paint problem

While the dangers of lead poisoning have been understood for decades, getting local officials to acknowledge the presence of the problem in this community has been slow in coming. Afteryears of Investigative Post bringing light to the issue, local governments are responding. As Geoff Kelly reports, first, Erie County established a program. Now, the city of Buffalo has its own pilot program and the early results indicate an urgent need. In January, the program's first month, Kelly says officials inspected 68 residences.Seven of those units displayed evidence of potential lead exposure.

Jay joined Buffalo Toronto Public Media in 2008 and has been local host for NPR's "Morning Edition" ever since. In June, 2022, he was named one of the co-hosts of WBFO's "Buffalo, What's Next."

A graduate of St. Mary's of the Lake School, St. Francis High School and Buffalo State College, Jay has worked most of his professional career in Buffalo. Outside of public media, he continues in longstanding roles as the public address announcer for the Buffalo Sabres of the National Hockey League and as play-by-play voice of Canisius College basketball.
