Eastern Niagara Hospital in Lockport has announced it has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, due to millions of dollars in accumulated debt.
The 134-bed facility will continue to offer all the services it does now, but the hospital has been cutting back services in recent times due to its fiscal troubles.
It closed its maternity unit in June and in August it announced it would close and sell the former Inter-Community Memorial Hospital in Newfane. The hospital has laid off the equivalent of 90 full-time employees this year and another 50 vacant jobs were abolished.
