Buff General highest ranked among local hospitals

U.S. News & World Report is out with its annual ranking of hospitals. Its analysis includes data from nearly 5,000 centers across multiple clinical specialties, procedures and conditions. Scores are based on a variety of patient outcome and care-related factors, such as patient safety and nurse staffing. Hospitals are ranked nationally in specialties and regionally in states and major metro areas.

No local facility made U.S. News' honor roll of best hospitals - the top point-getters. However, the greatest concentration of best regional hospitals was in the New York City metro area. Buffalo General Medical Center received the highest score locally:

  • Buffalo General Medical Center ranked high performing - the highest possible ranking - for neurology and neurosurgery, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), colon cancer surgery, heart bypass surgery, heart failure and hip and knee replacement. It also was ranked average for abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery and lung cancer surgery.
  • Erie County Medical Center ranked high performing in heart failure and average in COPD, heart bypass surgery and hip and knee replacement.
  • Kenmore Mercy ranked high performing in COPD, heart failure and hip replacement.
