Buffalo airport building lactation room for nursing mothers

Buffalo's primary airport is constructing a lactation room for traveling, nursing mothers. The announcement comes after legislation was recently introduced in the state legislature by Buffalo senator Tim Kennedy that would require large New York airports to offer such rooms.

NFTA spokesman Doug Hartmayer says the authority is taking a proactive approach and is voluntarily constructing a space now.

"We could see that the requests were becoming more frequent so we decided to eek out some space within the terminal where we would be able to build this nice room for moms," Hartmayer told WBFO.

The secure, private lactation room is being built in the airport's east concourse, near Gate 14. It will include running water, a table, chairs and a shelf.

"There are very few airports in the United States that have a dedicated room for moms to feed their baby or express their breast milk with a pump," Hartmayer added.

The airport is covering all construction costs. The room is expected to be completed by the end of the month.

“The NFTA has once again proven themselves to be an industry leader in both the state and the nation,” said Kennedy, in a statement. “Rather than waiting for this legislation to pass and be signed into law by the Governor, the NFTA has chosen to embrace this change, making Buffalo-Niagara International Airport among the first in the state to offer a lactation room for new mothers. I applaud this progressive decision, and I urge airports across the state to follow the NFTA’s lead.”
