Magazine ranks Roswell Park among best U.S. cancer centers

Buffalo's Roswell Park Cancer Institute has again been named one of the country's best cancer hospitals. A new ranking from U.S News and World Report ranks Roswell #43 in the nation, up from #50 last year.Roswell is the only New York cancer center outside of Manhattan on the list. The hospital scored high in areas like survival rates for patients, availability of advanced technologies and patient services. President and CEO Candace Johnson said the ranking shows Roswell's quality of care.

“I think it shines a light on our employees and our physicians and doctors that we’re really doing a great a job,” Dr. Johnson said. “It recognizes quality and shines a light that we are among the best in the country.”

Johnson says quality care is something that Roswell focuses on.

“I think we pride ourselves on quality. We focus on it, we pay attention to it, and we’re getting rewarded for that,” she said.

Johnson said Roswell is a relatively small cancer center in a small market, and that makes landing on such a list an difficult task.

“I think it makes it harder for us to compete with the big boys,’ she said. “But I think that’s really the positive about this as well. Even keeping against cancer centers that are much larger than we are, we managed to be on this list of the top 50 in the country.”

MD Anderson in Houston, Sloan Kettering in New York City, and the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota topped this year's list.
