Roswell Park unveils new ICU

Leaders and staff of Roswell Park Cancer Institute celebrated the opening of the hospital's new state-of-the-art Intensive Care Unit this morning.

The $4 million project involved relocating the ICU to the 8th floor and installing additional windows so each room is filled with natural light.  The 8,000 square foot unit is 40-percent larger than the old one.

Roswell Park's Chief Nursing Officer Maureen Kelly says it makes a nice environment for patients, their families and staff.

"From every single window here you have a view of the city or you have a view of the city and the lake. You can see Canada from a couple of places. Every single room has an extraordinary view," Kelly said.

"This really helps patients in getting better," she added. "I think this will be healing for all involved."

The rooms also feature automated lifts and wall-mounted booms to keep equipment off the floor and out of the way.

RPCI President and CEO Dr. Donald Trump says the needs of patients and their families guided the process of designing the new ICU from beginning to end.
