The Town of Tonawanda community will be getting over $909,000 for 14 environmental benefit projects, as part of a previous settlement regarding environmental violations at the former Tonawanda Coke Corporation facility.

The funding, announced in a joint release by Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York Attorney General Letitia James on Wednesday, comes from a civil penalty against Tonawanda Coke of $1 million for the Tonawanda Community Environmental Benefit Program.

The money will be administered by the Community Foundation of Greater Buffalo, with grants ranging from $5,000-$250,000 that will be allocated according to a community-wide voting process.

The former Tonawanda Coke site is being remediated under the state's Superfund and Brownfield Cleanup programs, with rigorous state Department of Environmental Conservation oversight to ensure the cleanup protects public health and the environment.
