Six people were safely rescued from the ice about 150 yards off Sturgeon Point Marina Sunday.
Evans Police received several calls about stranded ice fishermen about 1 p.m.. They had been out on the ice since 9 a.m. when the ice separated, spanning miles along the shoreline.
Three local fire companies and EMS personnel were called to the scene, but they were unable to reach the people, as well. The Erie County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit eventually made the rescue, with three separate transports.
The fishermen were not injured. However, police warn that wind and water currents will cause shifts and separations in the ice on Lake Erie, resulting in dangerous conditions for anyone out on the lake. They also advise ice fishermen to always carry reliable communication, distress signaling and emergency gear.
