It’s an event aimed towards decreasing the carbon foot print across the globe. Members of the community are expected to gather at One HSBC Center for the Earth Hour movement.Buffalo’s tallest building will be lights out for one hour Saturday night. Seneca One Realty, the owners of One HSBC Center announced that they will be participating in the Earth Hour movement. A concept that raises awareness about energy conservation. Chief Operating Officer Steve Fitzmaurice said this is just a small step in trying to reduce energy waste.

“It’s showing that everybody around the world can make a difference when it comes to energy conservation and sustainability, but in a very visible sense for a skyscraper like ours and I’m sure that there are others here in the area doing the same thing it’s in solidarity with other people around the world,” said Fitzmaurice.

The effort began in 2007 and unites over 150 countries that all plan to flick the light switch together. Fitzmaurice said HSBC tower does their part by making sure the building doesn’t use excess gas, water or electric.

“Well in a building like ours were very conscious of the hours of usage, so we try and make sure that energy is controlled by an energy management system that would turn systems on and off at the correct time. We have people that perform manual patrols of the building to make sure that in fact lights are turned off,” said Fitzmaurice.

Fitzmaurice said participating in event is one way to take a stand against climate change and protect future generations. The blackout will begin at 8:30p.m. Saturday.
