Buffalo Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash lays out the district's plan for using $289 million in federal funding for the 2021-22 school year.

Buffalo Schools Superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash said Thursday he wants to create a school district that is more equitable and can provide greater opportunity for achievement.

With $289 million in federal relief funds and an outline to spend the money, he said he believes the goals centered on reopening safely, making up for lost learning time, closing the digital divide are reachable within the next school year.

But there are issues Cash acknowledged which plague the city that are outside the realm of the school system, yet adversely impact school children, one of which is food insecurity.

“We see that if kids don't eat healthy and well, every day,” he said. "Then it affects their attention and affects their focus and ability to do well in school.”

And it takes more than just the school system to produce children who are ready to take on tomorrow’s challenges.

“Schools are part of a larger ecosystem,” Cash said. “And in them they have surrounding communities, neighborhoods, regions, states, counties, all of that represents a concentric circle community that affect kids, affect our students.”
