AAUP investigating Canisius, Medaille over pandemic budget cuts

American Association of University Professors

The American Association of University Professors has been questioning Canisius College since the private Jesuit college cut back its staff and faculty - including some tenured faculty - over the summer to deal with the fiscal crunch of COVID-19. Saying there is a crisis in academic governance, the AAUP is now starting aninvestigation of seven institutions of higher education.

The group said it wants to know if there has been a break from its principles and standards of academic governance. In a statement, the faculty union said many colleges had shifted to much more control of faculty and teaching and made major cuts in programs and faculty, blaming the virus.

Locally, the investigation will cover both Canisius and Medaille College and is expected to be concluded early next year.
