Voters in the Kenmore-Town of Tonawanda School District have approved a $75 million capital project to make health, safety and security improvements to all school buildings.
About 1,400 people voted and the project was approved by a more than 3-1 margin. The district said the project will be funded primarily through New York State Education Department Building Aid, with additional funding from the district’s capital reserve and a property tax impact of $16.80 per $100,000.
Work will include:
- more secured single points of entry in all school buildings
- replacement of drinking water pipes in all school buildings
- new carbon monoxide detection systems
- new safer “Baker”-style pool drains in middle and high school swimming pools
- new student pick-up and drop-off zones at Edison Elementary, Hoover Elementary and Middle School, Kenmore East High School and Kenmore West High School
- new artificial turf on the athletic field at Kenmore East
- gym upgrades and renovations at Holmes Elementary, Franklin Middle, Hoover Middle and Kenmore West
- a new adaptive playground for students of all abilities
- additional single-occupant restrooms in middle and high schools
- classroom additions at Edison, Lindbergh and Hoover Elementary
- critical build needs such as roof replacement, window replacement and resurfacing of parking lots and sidewalks
The district said its schools are 60-90 years old.
