Amherst Police say Sweet Home High School was briefly placed under a lockdown Thursday afternoon.

Police said it happened shortly after 2 p.m., after a student claimed she heard a gunshot in the school parking lot. She told investigators that she witnessed a flash and heard a loud noise, but could not definitely describe it as a gunshot.

Numerous Amherst Police officers responded, but found no evidence of a firearm discharge either in the parking lot or in the school building.

The lockdown was lifted before 3 p.m. and students were dismissed under police supervision.
