Nichols to remove name from ice rink

WBFO News file photo by Eileen Buckley

Word has surfaced Friday that the Board of Trustees at Nichols School in Buffalo has agreed to change the name of the school's ice rink.

The chair of the Nichols School Board of Trustees Jeff Meyer issued a statement. It said the Dann name will be removed. The school has been embroiled in accusations of inappropriate student teacher relationships that spanned decades after an independent report was released last month.

E. Webster Dann was named in the report of having inappropriate student relationships. Dann died last year.

The board statement said in wake of the January 5th report of past misconduct, the Dann Family has formally requested the board remove the name.

The board said it also believes it is in 'the best interest of the school'.

Last month's report accused up to ten former Nichols teachers of having inappropriate relationships with students.

The following is the full statement issue by the board chair:

“The Board of Trustees approved removing the Dann name from the school’s ice rink in the wake of its release Jan. 5 of an independent report about past misconduct involving students. The Dann Family, which has long supported Nichols and its mission, formally requested that the board do so.  In light of this request, as well as what the board believed to be in the best interest of the school going forward, the board decided to remove the Dann name from the rink.”
