Comptroller: East Aurora school district under 'significant' fiscal stress

East Aurora's school district is under significant fiscal stress, according to a report issued Thursday by state comptroller Thomas DiNapoli.Twenty-six districts across New York are considered to be fiscally stressed, down from 59 districts last year. The East Aurora Union Free School District was given a fiscal stress score of 73.3%, the highest in the state.

Four other WNY districts—Evans-Brant, West Seneca, Niagara-Wheatfield and Springville-Griffith—are being called susceptible to fiscal stress. Scores are based on financial information filed with the State Education Department as of the end of 2017, including year-end fund balance, cash position, short-term borrowing and patterns of operating deficits.

East Aurora is one of two districts considered to be under "significant stress," the other being Eldred Central in Sullivan County. Seven districts have been deemed to be under "moderate stress" and 17 are called susceptible to stress.

“While it is welcome news that so few school districts across the state have been classified as in fiscal stress, school officials should remain vigilant and carefully consider how their budgeting decisions will affect their long-term fiscal condition and local taxpayers," DiNapoli said, in a statement.

The state's “Big Four” cities of Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Yonkers are not included in the report. They will be scored later this year. The monitoring system does not score New York City.
