Local student receives college acceptance to Harvard

WBFO News photo by Eileen Buckley

High school seniors have been anxiously awaiting their acceptance notices from colleges this month.  WBFO's senior reporter Eileen Buckley met with a student at St. Joseph's Collegiate Institute in Kenmore who already learned he's been accepted into an Ivy League school.

"I understand you received one from Harvard, so that has to be very exciting.  "Yeah it's really just a relief with the schedule I've had this year,” responded Spencer Frome of Eggertsville. Frome is a senior at St. Joe's.

Frome said it was tough completing all the college applications this past fall, but now feels the weight has been lifted.

"How many colleges did you apply to?" asked Buckley. "So I applied to Harvard Early Action, which was my first choice, and then I applied to I think four UC schools out in California because my brother goes to Claremont Mckenna and he's a junior now and he might work in California after, so I was thinking we could be close,” Frome explained.

Frome also applied to Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. Still he tells us Harvard remains the highest on his consideration list.  He wants to study Neuroscience.

"The dream goal for me would be Neurosurgery – so that would be med school and a lot of training after that,” Frome remarked

Frome says St. Joe's has given a great deal of opportunity to excel in academics and sports.  He's achieved many honors course and plays hockey and soccer.

Frome parents are Harvard graduates and his dad is in education. He noted his mom was actually the first in her Italian immigrant family to not only attend Harvard, but graduate from high school.

“My grandparents came in from Italy when they were 20 and my grandfather always preaches the hard-work mentality – all that, and so  my mom actually got into Harvard College, my mom's sister also got into a university, so his shinning achievement is getting two daughters through college with a factory job,” Frome said.

May first, known as National Decision Day, is the deadline for seniors to select their college choice.
