UB president says increased philanthropy needed to continue growth

Chris Caya/WBFO News

During his sixth State of the University Address Friday, University at Buffalo President Satish Tripathi called UB "an institution on the rise," but said more private donations are needed keep momentum going.

Speaking to a full house in the Student Union, Tripathi said the changes he has seen since arriving in 2004 are truly transformational. But he says if its to join the ranks of the best public research universities, UB must encourage more private philanthropy.

"We want to inspire our alumni to give back because they recognize the profound impact that their UB education has had on their lives. We want our faculty and staff to see the great potential in our university and we want all of our university friends to support our student's dreams and our faculty's bold pursuit of life-changing research,” said Tripathi.

Tripathi said plans are in the works for a new "comprehensive campaign," with details being announced next spring. He said the campaign has already attracted a number of private commitments from "forward-thinking donors."

"This campaign will focus on supporting faculty through endowed professorships, increasing student scholarships, and improving the physical environment for teaching and research. This will allow us to attract the finest faculty and students and build the very best departments," Tripathi said.

UB’s last campaign ended in 2003 and raised about $300 million.
