Budding young writers came from across all of Western New York to the WNED|WBFO studios to share their stories as part of the PBS Kids Writers Contest.
Students from kindergarten to third grade read their work to family, teachers, and other students.
First grader Elliott Knoll placed first in his grade for his story “Mother Nature,” a comic book tale with detailed illustrations. Knoll said seeing some of the other stories gives him ideas for future projects.
“I really liked the one about the boy being a writer,” said Knoll. “I might write a book later about me being an artist and me just sitting at my desk being like, ‘What should I write?’”
Knoll is planning to write a comic book series about two brothers who find “power suits” and go on adventures.
The PBS Kids Writers Contest has been held at WNED|WBFO for over 20 years. This year’s first-time sponsor was Medaille College.
Medaille College President Dr. Kenneth Macur said the school decided to sponsor the event because it reflects two of the school’s core values: curiosity and imagination. He said diversity was on display as well.
I think it’s really amazing. You can tell that there’s a mixture of kids from all over the region – both public schools, private schools, home network kids – so there’s a lot of creativity,” said Macur.
Macur said he would like to see the school sponsor the contest again next year.
