The Lewiston-Porter School Central School District is the latest district to announce plans to begin drafting a new student gender identity policy. Lewiston-Porter Schools Superintendent Paul Casseri tells WBFO News it is important to create a policy that is fair to all students.
"We're not just concerned about those students within our buildings that are identifying, but we also have to be concerned about those young people that come to us from other schools," said Casseri.
Starpoint Central School District already started discussions last month on a gender policy.
Lewiston-Porter Schools Superintendent Paul Casseri tells WBFO News there has been a great deal of informal conversation with fellow-superintendents in Niagara and Orleans Counties.
"How do we create policy that's going to create equity, opportunity and fairness, and an environment and a climate that is open, responsive, caring, loving for all of our kids," stated Casseri.
The State Education Department issued guidelines this summer that call to ensure equal access to all school programs, facilities and activities.
The Lew-Port School Board will be holding a work session November 8th and then the board is planning to try to adopt a new policy by November 24th.
