State Education Commissioner to speak at Daemen

New York State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia will be speaking at Daemen College in Amherst next week for the college's Distinguished Leaders Lecture Series. 

Commissioner Elia is a Daemen College graduate and former teacher in the Sweet Home Center School District.  She will appear on the Daemen campus Thursday, October 22nd at 11:15 a.m. in the Wick Campus Center Alumni Lounge. 

Daemen said the Elia will 'discuss current issues in higher education with representatives from colleges and universities from the Buffalo Niagara region and statewide'.

Daemen President Gary A. Olson, Dr. Michael Brogan, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college, and other administrators will be attending. Presidents and top academic officers from NYS private and public institutions will also attend the speech including Laura L. Anglin, President, Commission on Independent Colleges and Universities.

“We are very proud and pleased to host Commissioner Elia at Daemen and look forward to welcoming her back to our campus community,” said Olson. “Her visit offers us the opportunity to bring together educational leaders from across the state for a meaningful conversation on vital higher education issues.”

Elia, is a Lewiston native and has served in education the past 45-years.  Prior to accepting her position as commissioner, Elia served as schools superintendent in Hillsborough County, Florida.
