Local foods for local kids. That's a pilot program in ten Buffalo schools, testing serving foods from local farms and suppliers in the lunch room.
The program is a mix of year-round foods like potatoes or milk or yogurt and seasonal foods like last month's kale and this month's brussels sprouts and next spring's strawberries.
"We've been offering cooking schools at our farm to school events," said Food Service Assistant Supervisor Laurie Walsh.
"We've been developing the recipes and we bring in the cooks that will be featuring it and we give them the recipes and we give them an actual demonstration of what we will be serving on the farm to school events."
Every classroom in every school also has a kale plant so students can see how it grows.
Walsh says kids seem to like the food and the fresh food, especially the younger students who may not be familiar with some of the local crops.
