Two weeks after debating whether or not to comply on time with the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Civil Rights, the Buffalo School Board has come to a final decision.A report responding to recommendations for the city’s criteria-based schools to be more integrated and equal will be sent to the Office of Civil Rights by August 15. School Board Vice President Jay McCarthy says multiple people encouraged the board to meet the requirement on time.

“Everybody we spoke to, Dr. Elliott, the Commissioner of State Ed, everybody said it would not be the right thing to do to ask for an extension or to turn in anything late,” said McCarthy.

In the middle of a special meeting of the board, today, a brief executive session was called to discuss changes to the report. McCarthy says the changes were nothing major, and that the important thing was meeting the Office of Civil Rights’ requirements on time.
