Brown says Distinguished Educator spot depends on his replacement

Interim Buffalo Schools Superintendent Darren Brown says whether or not the city's Distinguished Educator position is filled again is dependent on new school leadership. It has been just days since State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia decided not to renew the contract for Judy Elliott, who filled the role since 2012. In a letter to Board President James Sampson, Elia indicated she was assessing the Distinguished Educator Program.

"You know what, I’ve worked well with Dr. Elliott. I think the Commissioner is waiting to see who will be the permanent Superintendent, and to see if the district or that individual needs that level of support,” said Brown.

Earlier this week the board interviewed former Memphis City School superintendent Dr. Kriner Cash, said to be a frontrunner for the position.

Overall, Brown agrees the need for the Distinguished Educator will depend on who takes over from him as a permanent Superintendent.
