Enrollment is rising in South Buffalo Charter School, as the school hires teachers and sets up new sections for students across the kindergarten through eighth-grade school.
That reflects an enrollment which may rise from 800 to 941 over the summer. That's students not only from the city but also an array of suburban schools.
"I think the one thing that I have really come to appreciate in the year that I've been here is that we are a destination," said school principal Robert Maulucci who has worked in city schools for two decades.
"We are not a dumping ground. We're a destination. People want to send their kids here. People are invested. I feel like our commitment that we have gotten over the last year from parents has been slightly better than I've experienced in the past."
Maulucci says South Buffalo Charter is listed as a school in good standing with test scores he always wants higher, pretty good in Math and lagging in English and he's waiting for the new state report cards. He says that academic status may reflect committed parents and a longer school day.
