U.S. ambassador to Canada addresses Niagara grads

Mike Desmond/wbfo news

The U.S. ambassador to Canada says the two countries are getting along well, in North America and around the world. Ambassador Bruce Heyman was at Niagara University last night to speak to the graduate commencement.

He says a new agreement calling for pre-clearance will help legitimate travelers get back and forth much more quickly. Heyman says getting those Nexus cards is a really good idea.

"Only 13.5 percent of the people who crossed the border have used the Nexus Card of all the border crossings in 2014. Some crossings are actually doing a much better job," Heyman said.

"Kudos to BC (British Columbia) who's running about 33 percent. If you cross frequently, it's even more important that you do this. It helps the border move faster, more effectively."

Heyman says getting pre-cleared travelers moving faster allows border security to get a better look at those who present issues and who might receive more questions.
